Updates, Projects, Ideas, Etc...

I have funally (finally + fun = funally) succumbed to the world of blogging.

You may be asking, "Null Synaptic? Why on Earth would you title your blog that?"

My involvement with other artists has influenced me to start producing and participating in more collaborative works. I finally decided to start my own company known as
Null Synaptic Productions.

null
: adj : without value, effect, consequence, or significance.

synapse
: n : a region where nerve impulses are transmitted and received, encompassing the axon terminal of a neuron that releases neurotransmitters in response to an impulse, an extremely small gap across which the neurotransmitters travel, and the adjacent membrane of an axon, dendrite, or muscle or gland cell with the appropriate receptor molecules for picking up the neurotransmitters.

A domain name has been created and a website is in the works, but first, I am currently working on a couple projects.

"Complex Environment: this is not a bar"
Produced by Bethany Nelson and Lily Sloan

(Not affiliated with Null Synaptic)

December 4-5, 2009

This project focuses on the natural behaviors of people and customers of Banter, a coffee shop / bar in Denton, TX. During "super secret spy surveillance missions," Nelson and Sloan recorded actions and dialogue of Banter patrons. These observations are being recreated by modern dance artists and put back into the Banter space to create a slightly parallel universe. In other words, natural behaviors placed unnaturally in a live venue.

Live sound design and composition by John Osburn.

"Untitled Null Synaptic Collaboration"
Produced by John Osburn
Anticipated debut: Spring 2010

This collaboration between Zach Boston, Jesse Grisak, and John Osburn features film, live music, and live theater. In the story, the main character is attempting to figure out the identity of his wife's murderer, but is having trouble due to psychiatric medicine impairing his judgment and interfering with his thoughts.

This project is in early stages of planning.

Future projects include working with the Queen's University Centre for Excellence in the Creative and Performing Arts in Belfast, Northern Ireland to create a multimedia collaboration to be performed in a public venue in the Belfast community. Initial project ideas include using electronics to alter normal situations, i.e. triggering a bodhran choir to eventually produce an electronic sound score with the natural sounds of the bodhran interwoven in the finished product.

I am also writing a few pieces here and there which I will share in this blog once they are completed.

Here's to new endeavors!
